If you’re joining me here at the beginning of my writing journey, you are catching me after many years of trying and failing to write a complete story. I was constantly running into dead ends or writing scenes to a story that didn’t quite work out. But! I’m starting to finally feel on track, and when I initially thought I was a “pantser” when it came to laying out details of a story, I’m discovering I’m more of a planner, or at least a “plan-tser.”

Currently, my story “The Provider,” is partially outlined, with approximately 10% of scenes written. I’m using the 3 act structure, wherein act two is split into part A and B. Each act/part ideally has about 10 scenes, with key genre scenes plugged in, and connecting scenes are a work in progress. Though not complete, the process of outlining and writing the “zero draft” or “discovery draft” have really helped me feel like I’m having a breakthrough!

I’m actually writing a story that makes sense and has a logical progression, and the outlining process actually really helps me! Initially my approach to outlining was very standoffish. I found it rigid and thought I had to know exactly what happens. However, when I realized it’s ok to just plug in what I know has to happen for sure, then plug in connecting scenes, that are fluid and can change as I discover my story, it was pretty freeing. Not to mention it prevented me from writing a bunch of scenes that really had no place in the story as a whole. So far, I’m pretty much done outlining Act 1 and Act 2A, with the first drafts of the key scenes written.

Depending on my mood, I alternate outlining, worldbuilding, writing actual scenes, and working on this website. As everything stands now, I’m pretty excited about the process! Once I’m further along I hope to even share sneak peaks or scenes! Looking forward to that day.
